Marine Safety Unit Duluth History

On February 2, 1976, the Coast Guard combined Marine Inspection Office with the Captain of the Port to establish what was known as Marine Safety Office (MSO) Duluth. The functions of these two commands had been performed continuously in Duluth since the mid-1940s. In July 2005, due to reorganization, the MSO was renamed MSU Duluth. On July 1, 2014, the MSU relocated to the Gerald W. Heaney Federal Building.

MSU Duluth has a history of excellence in carrying out its regular responsibilities and responding to emergencies. MSU crews have been recognized for their outstanding performance by receiving three Coast Guard Unit Commendations and two Meritorious Unit Commendations.
