Capt. Tim List
Commander, Coast Guard Sector North Carolina
Capt. Tim List assumed the duties as commander, Sector North Carolina in June 2023. He leads a team of over 1,300 Active, Reserve, and Auxiliary Coast Guard women and men operating eight Boat Stations, three Aids to Navigation Teams, two Marine Safety Detachments, two Sector Field Offices, and one cutter in an area of responsibility which spans 3,375 nautical miles of inland, river, and coastal waterways, two military and economic strategic ports, and three interstate lakes. His duties include Captain of the Port, Federal On-Scene Coordinator, Officer in Charge Marine Inspection, Federal Maritime Security Coordinator, and Search and Rescue Mission Coordinator.
List received his commission in 2000 and has served across the Coast Guard’s operations ashore community including field tours at Marine Safety Office Miami, Sector Los Angeles-Long Beach, Sector Honolulu, and Sector San Francisco.
In addition to his field tours, List’s staff assignments include tours within the Department of Defense, Department of State, and Department of Homeland Security. He has served as the Coast Guard Liaison to the Secretary of Defense, a Senior Advisor to the U.S. Special Representative for Afghanistan and Pakistan, and Military Assistant to the Deputy Secretary of Homeland Security.
He holds a Bachelor of Arts in Environmental Management, a Master of Science in Quality Systems Management, and Master of Science in Homeland Defense and Security. His military decorations include the Defense Superior Service Medal, three Coast Guard Meritorious Service Medals, six Coast Guard Commendation medals, the 2015 Coast Guard Magnussen Innovation Award, and the 2003 DHS Innovation Team Award.
Capt. List is married to Rear Adm. Carola List, U.S. Coast Guard.
